Juvenile detention camp, also known as Camp Green Lake is something of a modern day Alcatraz for children. Young Stanley Yelnats finds himself digging holes in the blazing hot desert along with other minor offenders in an effort to please the warden and her assistant, Mr. Sir. Tempers rise, patience grows thin, and mysteries grow more complex with each day until Stanley makes an interesting discovery that makes everything start to change.
